The History Of Guthrie Baptist Church
What We Believe
WHAT WE BELIEVE
At Guthrie Baptist Church we believe there is one, and only one true God; that in the Godhead there are three persons; God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
We believe the sole authority for our faith is the Bible, God’s Holy Word, and that it was written by men who were divinely inspired. We believe in the complete infallibility of God’s Word and we consider it to be the standard by which all human conduct should be measured.
WE believe man was created in the image of God and His holiness, but chose to transgress, thereby falling from that state of Holiness. As a consequence, all mankind was plunged into sin and is under eternal condemnation.
We believe God provided a way for mankind to be free from condemnation through the sacrifice of His only son, Jesus. To that end we believe God’s salvation of sinners is wholly of His grace and not of any work we can do to be worthy. We are saved when we come in repentance of our sins, placing our faith in the atoning death and bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ. We believe there is no other way to be saved from our condemned state.
We believe that through justification, God’s perfect righteousness is gifted by God’s grace to those who accept Jesus as their savior and lord.
It is our belief that the blessing of salvation is made free to all by the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Nothing prevents even the greatest of sinners from God’s grace and forgiveness except rejection of Jesus. It is through the regenerative work of the Holy Spirit whereby sinners come to knowledge of God’s saving grace and that there is nothing they can do to earn their salvation.
We believe those who sincerely profess their faith in Jesus will endure until the end upheld by the work of God’s Holy Spirit and the power of God through their trust in Jesus Christ.
We believe that Jesus sits at the right hand of God the Father, making intercession for those who’ve placed their faith in Him. To that end, we believe in the priesthood of the believer and that we con confess our sins directly to God through Jesus.
We believe that one day, at a time known only to God the Father, Jesus will return and rapture His church. Until that day we believe we are charged with fulfilling Christ’s “Great Commission” found in the Gospel of Matthew chapter 28 verses 19 and 20, where we read: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (NIV translation)
Our Church History
Guthrie Baptist Church has been a beacon for the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the Guthrie Kentucky community since it was founded in 1834. The church began as an outgrowth of Spring Creek Baptist Church. Guthrie Baptist was originally known as Oikadelphia Baptist Church when it joined the Bethel Baptist Association that same year. The church grew from 26 charter members to 48 members in its first year.
Guthrie Baptist has gone by two other names: Oikadelphia and Graysville, adopting the Name Guthrie Baptist Church after moving to Guthrie from the Graysville area in 1874.
Guthrie Baptist Church has a proud history and a firm foundation. We continue to look forward as God leads our journey toward the future and in our service to Him.
